Restoring Traditional Water Resources: Vishwaspur’s Journey to Water Security

Chhattisgarh’s water story is full of surprising contrasts. Despite being home to four major rivers—including the Mahanadi, Indravati, and Sheonath—and numerous perennial streams, the state struggles with severe water scarcity. Although 75% of its cultivable land has the potential for irrigation, only 16% is currently irrigated, highlighting a major gap in water resource management.

For most families in rural Chhattisgarh, farming is their primary livelihood. However, water scarcity is not just an inconvenience—it threatens food security, income, and survival. In many villages, the lack of efficient irrigation systems forces farmers to depend on erratic monsoons, putting their crops and futures at risk.

When our team visited Vishwaspur, a village in Chhattisgarh and listened to the villagers’ concerns, it became clear that immediate intervention was necessary. We mobilized and empowered them to take action, using local resources and traditional water conservation knowledge.

Determined to find a solution, the villagers came together and began digging a pond. The task was tough, with stony soil slowing their progress, but they refused to give up. Their perseverance paid off when they saw water beginning to accumulate in the pond. In just 15 days, the villagers successfully constructed a functional irrigation pond, ensuring better water availability for their crops. After completion of the work, the villagers were rewarded with carefully-made Cloth for Work kits comprising basic essentials.

The completion of the pond was more than just a technical achievement—it marked a mindset shift within the community. The villagers realized they no longer needed to wait for external help. With the right approach, motivation, and teamwork, they could solve their problems independently.
