A Neglected Water Stream and Growing Risks
In Paini village, Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, clean water had become a daily struggle. The main water stream (dhara) had not been cleaned for nearly two years. Thick bushes, moss, and weeds had grown all around, making the area slippery and unsafe. Villagers, especially women and children, were afraid of snakes and scorpions hiding near the water source. During summers, when the village taps run dry, this stream becomes the only source of water. But the dense overgrowth made it extremely difficult for people to reach and collect water safely.
Coming Together for Change
When Goonj’s Cloth for Work (CFW) team visited Paini for the first time, the idea of shramdaan (voluntary community work) was new for many villagers. Through discussions, people began to understand Goonj’s approach — working together for one’s own village with dignity and collective effort.
Over three days, villagers worked for 5–6 hours each day, cleaning the water stream and surrounding area. They also built a small protective wall along the path, cleaned around the water tank, and repaired a nearby bisouna (resting area).
Despite the cold weather, men and women came together enthusiastically. Tools in hand, they cleared the overgrowth, restored access to clean water, and made the space safe again for everyone.

The Outcome — Clean Water, Safer Paths, Stronger Bonds
As Vinita Devi shared,
“After the cleaning, it has become much easier to collect water. Earlier, no one worked together, but this time everyone joined hands through Goonj’s initiative.”
Similarly, Jayanti Devi added,
“Now our children can safely go near the stream. There’s no fear of snakes or scorpions anymore. Working together like this felt really good.”
This simple yet powerful act of community collaboration not only solved a local problem but also revived a spirit of unity and self-reliance in Paini village.
