A Road Rebuilt with Shramdaan: When a Village Chose Collective Action Over Waiting for Solutions

From a Problem to a Path of Solutions

In Paanti village of Jamui district, Bihar, monsoon rains had cut the main road of the village and created a severely eroded pit. The broken stretch of road had divided the community and created serious mobility challenges for months. Movement had become risky and exhausting. Four-wheelers and tempos could not cross without the fear of overturning. During medical emergencies, transporting crops, or during wedding processions, villagers were forced to park vehicles far away and walk the remaining distance. What was once a pathway of connection had turned into a barrier affecting everyday dignity.

 People Took Charge

When our team visited the village, accessibility as an issue came from the community. We mobilized, motivated and enabled the villagers to take up the problem themselves and repair the road with their resources, wisdom, time and effort.  With spades, shovels, and baskets, people filled the deep pit with soil. Large stones were placed to prevent further soil erosion. Instead of remaining dependent on external help, the villagers united and repaired the road together through shramdaan (voluntary collective labour) under our Cloth for Work initiative

Impact

The repaired road has given the community its mobility and confidence back:

  • Vehicles now reach all homes safely.
  • Emergency access and hospital runs are easier.
  • Transporting harvest and essential goods is smoother.
  • Families across the road feel connected again.

To honour their collective effort, Goonj rewarded the families with a Family Kit containing winter clothing and essential items. This was not an act of charity—but of ownership, unity, and shared responsibility.
