Strengthening Connections: How the People of Na Kopohua Gaon Rebuilt Their Bamboo Bridge

For the farmers and daily-wage earners of Na Kopohua Gaon, Lakhimpur district, Assam, crossing the Charikaria River was a daily challenge. The existing bamboo bridge had deteriorated to the point where it was unsafe for school children, farmers, and traders who relied on it for their daily commute.

During discussions facilitated through Goonj’s Cloth for Work initiative, the community recognized an opportunity—not just to rebuild a bridge, but to reclaim their connectivity through their own wisdom and resources.

A Bridge Built with Collective Effort

With villagers leading the effort, the bridge was repaired, using locally available bamboo, ropes, and boats contributed by the community.

  • A durable, 492-ft bamboo bridge now connects the village, ensuring year-round safe passage.
  • Children no longer have to take long detours to reach school.
  • Farmers and local traders can now transport their produce efficiently, strengthening their livelihoods.

“This bridge means security for our children and convenience for all of us. It’s a reminder that when we come together, we can build solutions that matter.” – A resident of Na Kopohua Gaon

The entire effort demonstrates the power of community-led solutions, where resources are not just given but used as a tool for participation and dignity-driven development.

Community-Led Infrastructure for Lasting Change

The Na Kopohua bamboo bridge is more than just a structure—it’s a symbol of resilience, resourcefulness, and collective problem-solving. When people take ownership of their challenges, they create solutions that are practical, sustainable, and rooted in dignity.
