Life Under the Blazing Sun
In Laxmijanardanpur, a gram panchayat in Pathar Pratima block of South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, most men migrate to other states in search of work. Back home, women shoulder multiple responsibilities from cultivation on small patches of land to caring for families.
In the peak of summer, even daily travel becomes a challenge. In Dolui Para, one of the villages of this large panchayat, people often walk long distances to reach the local market, bank, or health centre. Those without bicycles depend on totos (local e-rickshaws), but there was no shaded space to wait. Under the relentless heat, villagers stood for hours hoping a ride would pass by.
A Meeting That Sparked Collective Action
During a village meeting led by Goonj’s team member- Shilpi Das, local women gathered to discuss the challenges they face every day. Among many issues, one seemed both urgent and solvable — the absence of a shaded place to rest or wait for transport.
Together, they decided to build one. Under Goonj’s Cloth for Work (CFW) initiative, community members came forward to take up the task. Over three days, they worked collectively to build a bench with a bamboo-and-wood shed, using locally available materials.
They contributed small amounts of money to buy essentials like nails, ropes, bamboo, and wood. Every step from digging the base to tying the roof reflected teamwork, determination, and ownership.

Shade, Comfort, and a Shared Space
The newly built structure quickly changed daily life in Dolui Para. The bench became a waiting point for totos, reducing travel time for many. Drivers, too, began to gather here, knowing passengers would be available.
“Earlier, we had to stand in the sun for long hours waiting for a toto. Now, we can rest and even get a ride faster,” shared Kanchan Dolui (32).
“This bench helps everyone, not just in summer but also during the rains. It gives us a place to rest and gather,” added Dipali Das (42).
What began as a simple idea has become a symbol of community problem-solving. The bench now offers relief during heatwaves, protection during monsoon, and comfort throughout the year — a small yet powerful act of collective action improving access and mobility for all.
