In the Raybag block of Belagavi district, Jodahatti village lies quietly on the edges of development maps. While known for its strong community ties, many households here lack access to essentials—including bathrooms.
For the women of Jodahatti, this gap affects more than convenience—it affects their dignity, privacy, and daily well-being.
Listening First, Building Together
In response to the lived realities shared by women during our visit, Goonj initiated a joint effort under the Cloth for Work (CFW) and Not Just a Piece of Cloth (NJPC) initiatives.
Over two working days, with over 70 women participating, six household bathrooms were constructed—with active community involvement.
These bathrooms are not just structures; they are safe, dignified spaces for women to bathe, change clothes, and care for themselves without fear or discomfort.

Menstrual Dignity, Not Just Menstrual Products
Alongside the construction work, Chuppi Todo Baithaks (Break the Silence sessions) were held. These safe spaces allowed women to reflect, share experiences, and build understanding around menstruation—challenging taboos and myths that often limit access to care and confidence.
Facilitators led conversations on:
- Understanding the menstrual cycle
- Safe and hygienic practices
- Dispelling common misconceptions
- Accessing support systems and resources
Need Based Kit as a Step Toward Empowerment
After each Baithak, women-specific kits were rewarded—containing reusable pads, soap, and essentials for safe menstrual care. In places where access is uneven, these kits are not charity—they’re dignity tools.
They reinforce that every woman has a right to manage her body with care, information, and agency.
When Women Lead, Transformation Follows
These combined efforts—building bathrooms and breaking silences—are small yet powerful shifts led by the community. By involving women in the design and implementation, the transformation becomes rooted in local understanding and shared ownership.
Because at its core, this is not a project. It’s a process of reclaiming dignity.
