Sunil’s Centre of Purpose: A Quiet Promise Kept in Dehradun

Not all dreams begin with grand plans. Some start with a quiet visit and a shared promise.

In 2020, Sunil Anand and his wife visited the Goonj center of circularity in Rishikesh. What they saw wasn’t just a space collecting material, but a space turning it into something new. A space where dignity was stitched into every folded cloth.

“It didn’t feel like charity. It felt like something deeper. Something human,” he recalls.

They made a promise: once they retired, they would volunteer together. But in 2021, Sunil’s wife was diagnosed with cancer, and in October 2023, she passed away.

“We had planned this life after retirement. But she couldn’t make it.
So now, I’m living it for both of us.”

“This was something we were supposed to do together,” he says. “Now I carry both our names in every collection drive.”

A Centre, A Circle of Care

In February 2024, Sunil opened a Goonj Drop-off Centre from his home in Dehradun. For him, it wasn’t just about storing materials. It was about fulfilling a shared dream, one folded item at a time.

“For me, Goonj is not work. It’s healing. Its purpose. It’s everything.”

He began by sending messages to friends and neighbours, starting a WhatsApp group. Today, that group includes over 200 people. His center has hosted more than half a dozen drives, all rooted in one principle:

“Don’t just contribute old clothes. Add one new thing. Give with thought.”

Every folded cloth became a moment of peace, something to hold on to, and move forward from.

“The healing started with Goonj,” he shares quietly. “I started sleeping better.”

A Story Shared, Again and Again

Sunil doesn’t just collect material. He shares stories. With every neighbour, every WhatsApp message, every visitor to his home, he tells them what dignity looks like in action.

“People don’t always know what they’re giving. But when they hear how it’s used, they start to care more.”

It’s not a transaction. It’s a conversation.

Sunil lives alone now. But his drop-off center never feels empty.

Every conversation, every contribution, every session – it’s not just work. It’s love. Continued..

“She’s not here anymore. But the dream still is and I’m doing my part.”
