Reviving a Lifeline: How Peddur Village Restored Its Canal Through Collective Action

A Village Once Fed by Water

In the dry belt of Bagepalli block in Karnataka, Peddur village had long relied on a traditional canal for irrigation and livestock needs. But over time, this lifeline became choked with wild growth—shrubs, vines, and weeds—rendering it unusable.

During a visit by the Goonj team, the villagers voiced their concern: the canal’s decline was impacting their fields, their cattle, and their shared future.

From Problem to Plan – A Community Steps Forward

Through a village-level meeting, residents collectively decided to act. 80 people came together and laid out a plan of action, prioritising sections of the canal that fed into farmland.

Each person brought tools they already had—shovels, sickles, hoes—along with deep knowledge of the canal’s old route and capacity. Over two days, they cleared and reshaped the waterway with skill and determination.

Circular Solutions – Water, Livelihood & Learning

What seemed like waste—cut shrubs and weeds—was changed. The villagers used the cleared vegetation for cattle fodder and as natural compost for their fields.

This wasn’t just a cleaning exercise. It was a community-driven model of circular thinking, where every step contributed to strengthening livelihood, soil, and spirit.

More Than a Canal – A Testament to Unity

As the restored canal began flowing again, its ripples extended beyond the water. Families celebrated their achievement, and each was given a Goonj Family Kit—a gesture of respect for their collective resolve.

In the words of one participant, “Unity is the backbone, and willpower drives every small or big change.”
