How My Home Became a Space for Purpose

Opening the Home for Goonj

11th February 2024 – My home opened as a Goonj dropping center in pursuance of the collective decision taken by me and my late wife, who had always wanted to work for Goonj. During these 18 months, my dropping center has handled material received from over 1,000 contributors.

Building a Community

Two WhatsApp broadcast groups of about 200 dedicated contributors have been formed, where regular Goonj updates and messages from Anshu Gupta (Founder – Goonj and Gram Swabhimaan) are sent. The contributors are also kept in touch personally by checking up on them and their families. This has helped create a sense of belonging among all contributors.

Promoting Green by Goonj

Efforts have been made to popularise Green by Goonj products among contributors. As a token of thanks, along with Goonj’s bag, small GBG products like keychains, squeeze balls, and mobile covers are also given to regular contributors and camp organisers.

Introducing New Contributions

While contributing to Cheshire Home Dehradun, a residential support center for about 50 persons with disabilities, it struck me that we were contributing usable but old material. Why not contribute something new for these people?

During the Joy of Giving month in October 2024 (now Joy of Sharing month), the idea of contributing at least one piece of new material was shared with my contributors — the response was overwhelming. The initiative continued in April 2025, with regular messages encouraging contributors to give at least one new item along with their other contributions. Items included clothes, bedsheets, blankets, stationery, toys, artificial jewellery, encyclopaedias, laptop/school bags, books, umbrellas, and footwear. The initiative was entirely optional, yet many contributors appreciated and supported it.

Starting the Goonj Ki Sabha

It was always my desire that volunteers be part of the Team 5000 initiative. While travelling with Namrata Gill (Goonj Team Member) for a volunteer meet at Rishikesh in May 2025, the idea of starting a Goonj Kitty was proposed.

At the volunteer meet, the concept was discussed, and with volunteers from Dehradun, the Kitty started in June 2025 with a monthly contribution of Rs. 200/-. During the two-hour monthly meetings, volunteers discuss Goonj for 10–15 minutes, followed by informal discussions, fun games, and refreshments.

This first initiative by Dehradun volunteers was later renamed Goonj Ki Sabha. The news of the Sabha was circulated by Goonj among its members, and it is expected that Sabhas will be started by volunteers across India. This initiative helps volunteers connect and also generate monetary contributions for Goonj.

Looking Ahead

I am looking forward to implementing new initiatives for Goonj and continuing to strengthen community engagement and resource mobilisation.
