Challenges in Access to Education

In Jakhari village, part of Gram Sabha Dunda in Uttarkashi district, children at the Government Primary School face many challenges. Most families depend on small-scale farming and daily wage labour for survival, making it difficult for parents to assist school essentials like bags, pencils, and notebooks on time. Without these, some children hesitate to attend school, fearing ridicule or punishment. Teachers often go the extra mile, even purchasing supplies themselves, to ensure children continue learning.

Cloth for Work Brings a Ray of Hope

During a Cloth for Work (CfW) activity, the school headmistress shared these concerns with the Goonj team, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. In response, Goonj organised an engaging program for the children, combining sports and art competitions with the distribution of school kits. The activities were designed not just to reach out with essentials but also to encourage creativity, confidence, and joy.

Joyful Learning and Renewed Motivation

After the competitions, school kits, including bags, pencils, and notebooks, were distributed. The younger children’s faces lit up with happiness, relieved that they could now attend school regularly without fear. Older children expressed excitement at being able to showcase their talents through drawing and games.

Changing Perspectives on Education

The headmistress, Ms. Rajeshwari, observed that it was the first time she had seen such joy on the children’s faces. She emphasised how essential this assist was in motivating children to attend school regularly. The children themselves expressed a powerful message to their parents: “If an organisation is doing so much for us, then you too should assist our education.”
