Context – When the Storm Disrupted a Way of Life
When Cyclone Michaung made landfall along coastal Andhra Pradesh, it disrupted more than just infrastructure. In Vodarevu village, a vibrant fishing hub in Chirala Mandal of Bapatla district, everyday life came to a sudden halt.
The cyclone impacted the fish-drying beds—crucial for the local fishing economy—and left behind debris and waste across the village. These fish beds were tended to mainly by women, while the men focused on fishing. This community’s daily livelihood was severely affected. Temporary restrictions on fishing due to safety concerns added to the uncertainty.
Community Steps In – Repairing and Restoring Together
In response, Goonj facilitated a community meeting to identify immediate needs and actions. The community collectively decided to:
- Repair the damaged fish-drying areas
- Clean the surroundings affected by the cyclone
Over 400 community members came together, completing the task within just two days—showcasing ownership and collective resolve.

Building Preparedness – Disaster Response Drills
Recognizing Vodarevu’s vulnerability to coastal disasters, Goonj also conducted disaster preparedness drills for the villagers. These mock sessions equipped the community with life-saving skills including:
- Safe evacuation during calamities
- Basic rescue and first-aid techniques such as CPR and resuscitation in drowning incidents
These drills created awareness and readiness, fostering resilience in the face of future challenges.

Dignified Acknowledgment –Cloth For Work (CFW)- Rahat Kits as Rewards
To recognize the community’s efforts, CFW-Rahat Kits—containing essentials like food, vegetables, and clean water—were rewarded to the participating families. These kits served as transitional assistance until normal livelihood activities could resume.
Impact – Beyond Cleanups, Towards Livelihood and Tourism
This collective effort not only restored the fishing beds, enabling families to resume work with dignity, but also revived the beach area, which holds potential for tourism given its proximity to Hyderabad. The action taken by the community is a testament to how local leadership and support can transform disruption into resilience.
