Restoring Dignity Amidst Floods: Relief in Jogi Gaon, Majuli

Floods Along the Brahmaputra

In Jogi Gaon, a flood-prone embankment area in the Ujani Majuli block of Assam’s Majuli district, the mighty Brahmaputra often brings devastation. When floodwaters swept through the region, families were displaced and daily life disrupted. To stand with the affected community, Goonj reached out with essential relief materials, sujnis (traditional quilts), bedsheets, buckets, mugs, and tarpaulins, focusing mainly on groups like widows, senior citizens, and weavers who are deeply impacted by recurring floods.

Relief With Respect

For Mina and many others, the sujni and bedsheet were not just items of comfort but symbols of hope, reminders that the community was not alone in facing adversity. Amid overcrowded relief camps and uncertainty, these simple materials assisted restore dignity and brought strength to rebuild.

Beyond Immediate Relief

The initiative reinforced Goonj’s approach, seeing communities not as passive recipients but as people deserving dignity and respect even in times of crisis. By reaching out to the families with carefully chosen essentials, Goonj stood alongside the community in Majuli, offering comfort and solidarity in the face of relentless hardship.
