Living on the Margins
Ariyathurai’s Tribal Theru, located in Gummudipoondi block of Thiruvallur district, is home to over 60 tribal families. For over three decades, they have lived in mud huts with thatched roofs, without basic facilities like electricity, roads, or reliable transport. With the nearest shop 3 kilometres away, access to essentials is limited. Most families depend on daily wage work in fishing and brick kilns, earning modest incomes. Education remains a challenge, with children often leaving school early.

The Impact of Heavy Rains
During heavy rains, fragile homes were damaged- roofs tore apart, floors were soaked, and families were forced to leave their homes. Shankar, a resident, shared, “The water leaked into our houses, soaking food and clothes. We couldn’t sleep or eat, and many had to take shelter in the government school.” With no work or income during this period, families faced severe hardship.
Relief With Dignity
In this difficult time, Goonj reached Ariyathurai with essential relief materials. Families received rice, lentils, black beans, clothes, blankets, and sandals ensuring food security and basic comfort for nearly ten days. These essentials not only brought immediate relief but also restored a sense of stability and dignity in the community.
A Community’s Gratitude
The collective strength was deeply valued by the villagers, who expressed joy that every household received equal care. As one community member reflected, “We were able to cook food and wear new clothes. For ten days, no one slept hungry.”
