When Exactly does Cloth Become Waste, Who Decides?

In this recent article we explore a simple question; When exactly does cloth become waste, and who decides that? The obvious answer is – When we stop seeing value in it. At home there are many such things we stop valuing in— that extra notebook, that old school bag, that spare blanket.. BUT they still hold value.

What if we see the possibility and value of these things for another person? It unlocks a culture of care, attention & action. It starts with a mindset shift about what is valuable- from scarcity to one of resourcefulness and circulation.

Goonj is nudging for this cultural & systemic shift in the world. A 5 minute read for you to mull over..

Goonj Shaping Global Conversation about Disasters : Hopkins India Conference 2026

Goonj’s advocacy for ‘Peoples’Participation as the Infrastructure of Development’  and World’s ‘Material as a Development Currency’ isn’t a one organisation or even a country idea; it’s relevant for a global rethink.

At the recent Johns Hopkins University India Conference this became evident when global development practitioners, scholars, and policymakers gathered and engaged with Goonj’s specially curated exhibition, Winessing Disasters: Myths and Realities.

Anshu Gupta, Founder Goonj and Gramswabhiman,  also centred on Goonj’s ‘Societal Alliances for Response and Resilience to Disasters (SARRD) framework through a critical question: How do we build societal alliances where the most vulnerable communities are at the centre of how the society learns about response, resilience, and development?

Story from the Ground

Remember missing school just to sleep a little longer or play a bit more? But  in Kothabanda, children missed school not by choice, but because the path to their school had become unsafe. When Goonj nudged, the community came together and built not one, but two bridges for their children’s safe passage to school.

If this story stayed with you, share it at home with your child. Turn it into a small moment of joyful learning. Let it be learning as you sit together with them to sort their pre-loved school supplies. When you talk to them about these children and families, just like theirs, they learn about caring, sharing, and why it matters.

Goonj’s Khushiyon Ka Recycle campaign is about children learning about sustainable living, peoples’ dignity and sharing with empathy, all from their home and their own surplus material.
