When the floods came, people chose resilience over waiting
Every year, monsoon floods submerge large parts of Assam’s Lakhimpur district, cutting off families and farmlands. In NC Letua village, households faced the same hardship year after year struggling to reach nearby markets, neighboring villages, or even their paddy fields once the waters rose.
But this time, instead of waiting for outside help, the community decided to act together.
A bridge built by hands, hearts, and hope
Under Goonj’s Cloth for Work and Rahat initiative, villagers came together— bringing bamboo, binding wire, and their own labour. With bamboo and local resources they constructed a bridge with their own wisdom and local resources.
What was once a seasonal isolation became a permanent connection — a bridge not just of bamboo, but of determination, unity, and shared purpose.
Today, as children cross safely and farmers carry their produce without fear, this simple structure stands as a powerful symbol of self-driven change.
Beyond the floodwaters, towards lasting change
For the people of Letua, this bridge represents more than convenience—it restores dignity, mobility, and the rhythm of everyday life.
It is a reminder that rebuilding after a disaster is not only about relief but about reclaiming control, together.
