A Scientist’s Search for Purpose Beyond Profession
Mrs. Gouri Chatterjee, a breast cancer researcher who spent most of her professional life in the United States, returned to Kolkata in 2015 after personal loss, the passing of her husband and later her mother.
She came back not just to visit family, but with a desire to contribute meaningfully to society. Her search led her first to Uttarakhand, where she found a group of five orphaned siblings at a local school.
She pledged to support their education till class 12, on the condition that the school ensured they completed their studies. Years later, all five have not only graduated but are now well-settled and leading dignified lives.
Bringing the Community Together at Harmony Apartments
Her home has become a micro-hub for civic engagement during Goonj’s collection drives.
She mobilises neighbours, organises logistics, and ensures broad participation, especially during campaigns like Joy of Giving Week.
A Life of Research, A Legacy of Impact
From cancer labs in the US to collection camps in Kolkata, Gouri ma’am’s journey is a testament to the power of reinvention. Her “second innings” is not about slowing down; it’s about showing up for others with empathy and action.
“It’s never too late to give back, especially if you have the will,” she says.
An Invitation to Others to Begin Their Own Second Innings
This is more than a volunteer story; it’s an invitation. As Goonj continues to grow, stories like Gouri ma’am’s light the path for others, especially seniors looking to give meaning to their post-retirement years.
We are honoured that in her second innings, Gouri ji chose Goonj. We hope her story inspires many more to take that first step.
