A Resilient Future for Majuli’s Students: Community Takes Charge of School Rebuilding
The Brahmaputra Janajati H.S. School in Lachan Gaon, Ujani Majuli block, Assam, has been a pillar of education, currently serving 120 students from the region. It’s more than just a school; it’s a beacon of hope and a center for learning. However, years of harsh weather and neglect had left its structure frail, with broken walls and a poor foundation threatening the children’s learning environment.
This is a story not of assistance, but of action—a powerful example of community resilience and people-led change.
Community in Action
The community knew that the future of their children couldn’t wait. Instead of waiting for external aid, the guardians and teachers came together with a shared purpose: to repair and restore the school. This collective decision underscores Goonj’s dignity-first ethos, focusing on sharing with purpose rather than mere charity.
With support from the team at Goonj through the Cloth of Work and School to School initiative, the community mobilized its own resources. The people contributed bamboo, tin sheets, and binding wires and other essential materials needed for the renovation turning their effort into a genuine partnership. This was a true collective undertaking, proving that sustainable long-term community rebuilding starts from within.

Securing a Brighter Learning Environment for 120 Students
The combined effort of the community, guardians, and teachers resulted in a successful renovation, creating an improved, safer, and better environment for the students. The rebuilding of Brahmaputra Janajati H.S. School exemplifies Goonj’s work beyond relief — stories that focus on long-term recovery and what happens once the immediate crisis has passed. It’s about securing the future, one school, one village at a time.
