A Volunteer’s Reflection: Finding New Meaning in Surplus and Sharing

A Volunteer’s Reflection: Finding New Meaning in Surplus and Sharing

I was feeling overworked, trying to meet all my deadlines, when I suddenly remembered Avsar, our bank’s employee volunteering programme that encourages us to take part in acts of service. Having engaged with the work of various NGOs several times before, I always try to discover new organisations. Amid the sea of organisations and after hours of browsing online, Goonj caught my attention once again.

Their website, filled with stories of collection camps, school awareness sessions and other initiatives, drew me in. I decided to reach out to them and schedule a visit.

Having engaged with several NGOs before, I have found that every visit to Goonj brings a fresh insight and makes the experience feel new all over again. What stood out to me about Goonj was its approach to channelising surplus material from urban areas to rural communities, where it can become part of locally driven solutions rather than simply being given away.

As the HR of the company, I put together a small team of 20 employees and reached out to Goonj to arrange a visit and understand their work. We decided to visit the Goonj office in Kolkata on 20 December 2025.

The morning arrived under a crisp, chilly sky. My team and I reached the Goonj office, where the team kindly took us through the space and explained their work and various initiatives in detail.

We learnt about the kits prepared under the Cloth for Work initiative, which bring together items such as shoes, gently used clothes and other essentials. These are channelised as part of an exchange, rather than simply handed out.

After understanding Goonj’s approach, my team and I took part in the work. A few of my teammates helped with sorting, while others worked on preparing the kits.

It was a day I will always cherish. A profound realisation struck me: this immersion at Goonj was not just another task or deadline to complete. It was an opportunity to look differently at the things we have, the things we hold on to, and the possibilities that can emerge when surplus is put back into use.

One of my teammates captured the experience beautifully after the engagement:

“This gave me a good break and was a stark realisation of how we keep holding on to things,

making them feel like a burden, rather than letting go and embracing the freedom of giving,

where true abundance flows from an open hand.”

It was truly an enriching experience, away from the highly digitalised, fast-paced world where so much of our time is spent in virtual meetings and in the pursuit of more.

The day reminded me that joy, peace and gratitude can also come from small acts of engagement and contribution. Instead of trying to change the world overnight, perhaps we can begin by changing our own habits — starting with the surplus in our closets and finding ways to put it back into circulation.
