Unsafe Path for Everyday Movement
Nestled beside the Chenab River, Kanthi village in Ramban district, Jammu & Kashmir is as beautiful as it is challenging to live in. For residents and especially children and the elderly walking to nearby towns and markets had become risky. The footpath connecting the village to the main road was uneven and damaged, making daily movement unsafe and difficult.
Villagers Lead the Change
When Goonj’s team visited under the Cloth for Work (CFW) initiative, the community shared their concerns and decided to take action together. Over three days villagers including men and women worked collectively to repair the path. Everyone took responsibility for different tasks like digging, cleaning, collecting stones, and levelling the surface. Armed with hammers, chisels, shovels, and spades, they worked tirelessly in tough hilly terrain to complete the repair.

Villagers Working Together to Repair Footpath
A Safe Path, Shared Pride
Villagers shared that if they hadn’t fixed it now, the coming winter would have brought more trouble for everyone. Their collective effort not only rebuilt a path but also strengthened their sense of ownership, dignity, and resilience. Today, the newly repaired footpath stands as a symbol of people-led change, showing how communities can rebuild and move forward together.
