A Joyful Beginning: Delhi Malayalees Association Hosts Its First Goonj Collection Drive
On 7th and 8th October, the Delhi Malayalees Association (R.K. Puram) hosted their first-ever Goonj collection drive, and what began as a donation event quickly became a heartfelt celebration of community, creativity, and consciousness.
Before the collection began, Goonj team members led a “Knowing Goonj” session, offering a glimpse into the organisation’s work, philosophy, and impact. The attendees were deeply moved, many expressing eagerness to visit Goonj Center of Circularity to witness how their material would be transformed into dignity-driven development.
Gullaks, Generations, and a Shared Creative Spirit
A standout feature of the drive was the Gullak-making and painting activity, where members of all ages, from grandparents to young children, participated with zeal.
Among the participants, three young women studying aerospace engineering stood out. One of them painted a graceful aeroplane across a Gullak and beautifully wrote:
“Goonj.. it!, Fly High”
Their creativity turned symbolic, blending their personal aspirations with a collective cause. The group decided to place their painted Gullaks in their college, as a reminder of what collaborative giving can achieve.
A Life of Research, A Legacy of Impact
From cancer labs in the US to collection camps in Kolkata, Gouri ma’am’s journey is a testament to the power of reinvention. Her “second innings” is not about slowing down; it’s about showing up for others with empathy and action.
“It’s never too late to give back, especially if you have the will,” she says.
An Invitation to Others to Begin Their Own Second Innings
This is more than a volunteer story; it’s an invitation. As Goonj continues to grow, stories like Gouri ma’am’s light the path for others, especially seniors looking to give meaning to their post-retirement years.
We are honoured that in her second innings, Gouri ji chose Goonj. We hope her story inspires many more to take that first step.

Small Acts, Big Ripples, A Community That Gave Together
Beyond contributions of material, this event became a platform for community bonding and intergenerational creativity. It wasn’t just about donating; it was about owning the process of giving, infusing joy into impact, and inspiring others.
“We came to give clothes… but left with a sense of purpose,” said one attendee.
A Message That Lifts Off: Goonj.. it! and Fly High
Goonj is deeply grateful to the Delhi Malayalees Association, not just for their contributions, but for reminding us that generosity can be joyful, and giving can be imaginative.
Their story embodies what Gullak stands for: small contributions that add up to something bigger, reflecting the spirit of what Goonj calls “people-powered change“.
