A Village’s Struggle with Water Scarcity
Pimpari (Sh), a small village in Kalamb block of Maharashtra’s Osmanabad district, is home to over 500 families and more than 2,500 residents. The community depends heavily on rainwater, making every dry season a challenge. In years of low rainfall, severe water shortages affect both drinking water and farming. While several borewells have been dug to address these needs, excessive use has depleted groundwater, with water now found only at depths of 700–800 feet.
Community-Led Solution Through Cloth for Work Initiative
During a Goonj-led meeting, villagers discussed their challenges and decided to take action by recharging borewells. This involved digging pits near borewells and filling them with small stones and broken bricks, allowing overflow water to percolate and replenish the groundwater.

Four Days of Dedicated Effort
On July 3, 2025, work began. Over the course of four days, 85 women participated actively in recharging six borewells with deep water levels. The community took full ownership of the project, working with unity, dedication, and a shared goal of improving water availability.

Tangible Improvements and Gratitude
Post-recharge, villagers observed a slight increase in water levels, offering some relief from water scarcity. On July 29, 2025, family kits were rewarded in recognition of the community’s efforts. Villagers expressed their gratitude, noting how useful the kits would be for their families.
