Battling Water Scarcity in a Rain-Deficient Village
Wadgaon (Shirdhon), a small village in Kalamb block of Maharashtra’s Osmanabad district, is home to around 2,500 residents—primarily farmers and labourers. In this drought-prone district, conserving rainwater is critical for survival. The village’s public forest area held several small ponds, but years of neglect had left many unable to hold water.
Collective Action Through Cloth for Work
Recognising the urgency, the community united under Goonj’s Cloth for Work initiative. On November 21, 2023, 120 villagers began the repair work on three ponds. Over three days, they worked tirelessly, digging and strengthening embankments, often singing together as they worked.

Nature’s Timely Reward
By November 23, 2023, the restoration was complete. Just two days later, heavy rains filled the ponds to capacity. This timely downpour brought immense relief, ensuring a sustainable water source for both people and livestock.
Lasting Impact for People and Animals
For locals like Balaji Gore, a shepherd, the restored ponds are a lifeline. “Earlier, our animals would roam far and still struggle to find water. Now, we have enough for at least two months,” he shared with gratitude.
