A Safe Space to Speak Freely: Building Confidence Through NJPC in Karnataka
The day began with a sense of quiet anticipation as we reached Kudlu Government Lower Primary School to conduct a session under Goonj’s Not Just a Piece of Cloth (NJPC) initiative. Focused on menstrual health, NJPC is not only about awareness, but also about building spaces where young girls feel seen, heard, and empowered.
As we stepped into the classroom, the energy was unmistakable. The students, girls between 12 to 15,sat ready, a mix of curiosity, nervousness, and enthusiasm in their eyes. The session opened with simple explanations on what menstruation is and why it’s normal, basic, yet often wrapped in silence or discomfort.
To our pleasant surprise, these girls already had a fair understanding of menstruation. They weren’t starting from zero. What they were seeking was reassurance that their experiences were valid and that they weren’t alone.
Busting Myths, Rebuilding Mindsets
As the discussion deepened, we navigated through common taboos, beliefs that disconnect girls from their own bodies. And they responded. Some nodded. Some giggled. But many engaged with honesty, sharing, questioning, and challenging. It was clear that while the stigma exists, so does their courage to confront it.
We encouraged them to talk about menstruation not just among themselves, but in the presence of boys, in families, and in communities, to treat it not as a hidden topic, but as a part of life. And they listened, wide-eyed and hopeful. There was a certain relief in hearing their questions answered with openness.
From Information to Empowerment
As the hour passed, the classroom transformed from a passive listening space to a collaborative circle of sharing. There were stories. There were smiles. There were brave voices asking thoughtful questions.
One girl asked, “How can I tell my brother without him laughing?”
Another said, “I want to tell my friends who didn’t attend today.”

These weren’t just reactions, they were signs of internal change, signs that the silence was beginning to break. By the end of the session, what stood out was not only their understanding but their growing sense of pride.
A Step Towards Dignity
As we walked away from the school, our hearts were full. Because we had witnessed something powerful, young girls choosing to own their voices. Choosing to talk. To listen. To question. And most importantly, to assist one another.
This was more than a hygiene session. It was a moment of connection, one that will ripple through homes, schools, and communities.
