Facing Water Scarcity in Chimla
In Chimla, a remote village 40 kilometers from Ashoknagar in Madhya Pradesh, residents struggled daily with severe water shortages. Water scarcity wasn’t just an inconvenience—it deeply impacted their daily lives, affecting their livelihoods, household chores, and even livestock care.
Coming Together for Sustainable Solutions
Realizing the urgency of the issue, villagers approached Goonj for guidance. A community dialogue ensued, centering the collective wisdom and needs of the people. Empowered by Goonj’s “Cloth for Work” (CFW) initiative, the villagers collectively decided to construct a ‘jhiria’—a small local water body.
Collaborative Effort in Jhiria Construction
Three Days of Collective Action
With remarkable unity and determination, 40 women and 6 men from the village participated actively in constructing the jhiria. Over three days of focused, collective effort, working 4 to 5 hours daily, the villagers successfully built this essential water resource, transforming their situation.
Life Transformed: Water Brings Joy and Relief
The completed jhiria drastically improved access to water, easing daily chores and providing enough water for animals as well. The happiness and relief among villagers were evident. Recognising their valuable efforts, Goonj rewarded the community with Cloth for Work kits, celebrating their dignity, unity, and resourcefulness.
