A Village Tradition Meets a Quiet Innovation
In Tamil Nadu, menstruation is traditionally acknowledged through a three-day celebration when a girl gets her first period. But in Karmangdi village, a predominantly tribal settlement in the Srimushnam block of Cuddalore, this cultural recognition met a new possibility — of turning menstruation into a conversation, and cloth pads into a means of livelihood.
When Stories Travel, So Do Possibilities
During a ‘Chuppi Todo Baithak’ led by the Goonj Tamil Nadu team, women in Karmangdi were introduced to MY Pads — cloth sanitary pads made at Goonj’s Chennai production unit using surplus cotton. Alongside menstrual awareness, the team shared stories of women from Chennai who are earning with dignity by making these pads. That story didn’t just inform — it sparked an idea.

From Curiosity to Collective Action
Inspired by what they heard, the women of Karmangdi began exploring how they too could produce cloth pads — not just for personal use, but to meet the requirements of other women in their village. This wasn’t a project. It was the beginning of self-recognition, of turning a so-called taboo into a thread of community care and possibility.
Cloth as a Carrier of Dignity
MY Pads are not just an alternative to synthetic products — they are stitched from local cloth, shaped by local hands, and passed from one woman to another as a step towards awareness, agency, and access. In Karmangdi, the cloth pad is now a medium — for breaking silence, for generating livelihood, and for restoring dignity.
Menstruation is a Human Issue
At Goonj, we believe that when half of humanity is women, menstruation isn’t a women’s issue — it’s a human issue. The story of Karmangdi is one more reminder that change doesn’t need to arrive from outside. Sometimes, it begins with a quiet conversation, a shared story, and the will to stitch something new.
