For 15 years, the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) center in Bishnupur, South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, lacked a permanent space. It moved from home to home, operating out of borrowed spaces, making it difficult for children to receive continuous early education, mid-day meals, and health support.
During a community meeting facilitated through Goonj’s Cloth for Work (CFW) initiative, the villagers decided—it was time to build their own Anganwadi center.
A Space Built with Community Strength
- Villagers came together, contributing time, effort, and resources over one month to construct the center
- Locally sourced materials like bamboo, wood, bricks, and rope were used to keep the construction sustainable
- A welcoming entrance gate was built, and villagers planted flower saplings along the path to make the center more child-friendly
- Goonj assisted with essential items—racks, chairs, ceiling fans, and toys—to make the space vibrant and comfortable.
“We no longer have to wonder where our children will go today. They finally have a stable learning space.” – Robin Maiti, Village Resident

The Anganwadi worker, Shravani Burman, shared how the lack of a stable center affected meal storage and learning continuity. Now, with a permanent structure, children have a dedicated place to study, eat, and grow.
