A Gathering Space with Purpose: How Women in Ouguri Dangdhara Created a Bamboo Bandstand for the Community

In Ouguri Dangdhara, Dhakuakhana block, Lakhimpur district, Assam, women came together to create something remarkable—a bamboo bandstand that not only provides shade and a meeting space but also preserves two cherished trees in the village.

The idea was simple yet deeply rooted in community wisdom and environmental responsibility. Instead of cutting down two significant trees, the women decided to build around them, reinforcing their commitment to preserving nature while creating a space for gathering and decision-making.

A Bandstand Built with Collective Spirit

  • Tribal women led the effort, contributing locally sourced bamboo for the structure.
  • The bandstand now serves as a meeting space, particularly for elders during village discussions and flood-related planning.
  • The women planted flowers around the structure, further enhancing the space’s beauty.
  • A public urinal was also constructed, addressing a long-standing need for sanitation and hygiene.

“It is of utmost importance for us to save the trees. They are our assets.” – Mrs. Jyotsna Pegu, a participant in the initiative.

More than just a functional space, the bandstand represents a shift back to traditional ways of gathering—where decisions were once made under the cool shade of trees.
