Building Strength Together: A Community House for Flood Resilience

Charanchuk Papung, Dhakuakhana Block, Lakhimpur, Assam

In Charanchuk Papung, a village in Lakhimpur, Assam nestled near the mighty Brahmaputra River, floods are a part of life. With 100 households and over 450 people, the community has long adapted to the rhythm of rising waters—seeking refuge on higher ground and relying on a sturdy embankment as their sanctuary.

Yet, amidst these challenges, the community saw an opportunity—not just to endure but to prepare, organise, and lead.

A Space Built by the People, for the People

Recognising the need for a safe gathering space during floods, the villagers came together to build a raised community house on stilts, inspired by the traditional homes of the Mishing tribe.

Under Goonj’s Cloth for Work (CFW) initiative, community members joined hands to construct not just a shelter, but a symbol of resilience and unity.

“This isn’t just a structure—it’s a testament to what we can achieve when we come together.” – Sunil Pegu, President, School Management Committee, Charanchuk Papung LP School”

Beyond Shelter: A Community Watchtower

Now standing strong, this community house is more than a meeting space. It serves as:

  • A safe gathering point during floods
  • A watchtower to monitor the river’s movements
  • A center for discussions & preparedness

In the face of recurring floods, this initiative shows how local wisdom, collective effort, and dignity-driven work can turn challenges into opportunities for resilience.
