In Pomaguri, a village in Dhemaji, Assam, where drought conditions threaten agriculture and livelihoods, the community took an innovative step to secure their future. Instead of waiting for solutions, they came together to build a greenhouse, ensuring they could grow saplings year-round while involving children in environmental stewardship.
Through Goonj’s Cloth for Work (CFW) initiative, women came forward and put in dedicated efforts to construct the greenhouse using bamboo, mesh, jute rope, and locally sourced saplings.

A Community-Led Solution for Climate Resilience
With limited farmland and the threat of erratic rainfall, the villagers chose their local school as the site for the greenhouse. This space would serve multiple purposes:
- Teaching children about the value of plants and conservation
- Encouraging the school to enhance its environment
- Providing a protected space for growing saplings
- Creating a sustainable cycle—where students plant trees in the future
A schoolteacher shared:
“I wanted to do this but didn’t know how. The assistance and motivation from Goonj empowered us to take the first step.”
Through this initiative, the village is not only greening their surroundings but also shaping the next generation’s connection with nature.
Beyond a Greenhouse: A Future of Environmental Stewardship
This greenhouse is not just about planting saplings—it’s about planting ideas, awareness, and responsibility in young minds. When children see their community building solutions together, they inherit the values of sustainability and self-reliance.
