For children in rural India, the COVID-19 pandemic brought more than just a temporary school closure—it disrupted learning, social connections, and emotional well-being. After nearly two years of being confined at home, students in Alyani village, Shahpur Block, Thane District (Maharashtra) were finally returning to school. However, bridging the gap between students and schools required more than just reopening classrooms.
To ease this transition, Goonj, through its School-to-School (S2S) initiative, organised a unique engagement activity—one that sparked creativity and restored the joy of learning.
Turning a Schoolyard into a Canvas for Creativity
As part of the initiative, children formed 10 groups and built 10 forts within the school premises using locally available resources. The activity was more than just play—it was about teamwork, problem-solving, and reclaiming their space in school life. The school ground transformed into a vibrant landscape of miniature forts, each designed with enthusiasm and intricate detailing by the children.
The sheer excitement and joy on their faces made it evident—education isn’t just about books and lessons; it’s about creating an environment where students feel connected and inspired.
Following this day-long activity, Goonj reached out School Kits and educational materials, ensuring that students had access to essential learning resources.
Bridging Gaps in Rural Education with Collective Action
For over two decades, Goonj’s School-to-School (S2S) initiative has been working to bridge material gaps in education by repurposing urban surplus as a catalyst for learning. The initiative goes beyond contributions—it mobilises communities, teachers, and parents to actively strengthen their local school infrastructure.
Key focus areas of S2S include:
- Providing School Kits, books, stationery, and sports material
- Enabling community-led efforts to build and repair classrooms, libraries, and sanitation facilities
- Encouraging collective action to address local educational challenges
Teachers and Students Engaging in Post-Pandemic School Rebuilding
A Teacher’s Perspective on Post-Pandemic Learning
Shekhar Ghodvinde, a school teacher, shared –
“After such a long break, students need more than just textbooks to reconnect with school. It is essential to create a positive learning atmosphere to reduce the psychological impact of the pandemic. These activities and the educational materials provided by Goonj will help in restoring their enthusiasm for learning.”
By bringing students, teachers, and communities together, Goonj is reshaping rural education—one school at a time.
