Kelte Village’s Journey: Community Revives Roads & Overcomes Migration Challenges

Kelte, a village in Maharashtra’s Ratnagiri district, has witnessed significant rural-to-urban migration. Many villagers, approximately half of the residents, have moved to cities in search of better earnings, modern amenities, and greater opportunities. This migration trend is a key driver of urbanization in India. However, those who chose to stay behind held onto a vision—to revive their village and its resources.

One of the pressing challenges they faced was a deteriorated road connecting Kelte to a neighboring village. The road’s poor condition disrupted daily travel and hampered connectivity. During a community meeting organized under Goonj’s “Cloth for Work” initiative, villagers voiced their concerns and sought a solution.

Emphasizing their role as equal stakeholders in their village’s progress, the community decided to take action. In a remarkable display of unity, the villagers voluntarily repaired the 2,700-foot-long road, overcoming a long-standing problem.

Goonj rewarded the community with family kits containing essential household items. The transformation of Kelte village stands as a powerful example of dignity-driven development. It highlights how grassroots wisdom, and community-driven efforts can build resilient, self-sufficient villages, even amidst the challenges of urban migration.
