West Bengal: Building bridges…

Three years ago, rains washed away the bamboo bridge at Foskadanga village in Alipurduar district of West Bengal. This led to the dwellers of the tribal hamlets in Kalchini block to travel an additional distance of 20 km to reach schools, health centres and local markets. Goonj, in collaboration with its partner organization NEST, motivated and mobilized 40 residents to rebuild the bridge under its ‘Dignity For Work’ (DFW) initiative, and rewarded them with customized kits. As a result of their tireless efforts, the region now has an access point that has enabled them to commute without walking for hours. However, the biggest boon has been for the livestock keepers, whose cattle can now make their way back to the hamlets before nightfall.
