From the time 8 years old Kartik found out that that everyone in his class was going to get brand new shiny shoes the next day, he couldn’t wait for the day to end. He woke up a little earlier than usual that morning got ready and ran to school.
Kartik lives with his parents in a Karigudda village, a remote village near Maski town in Karnataka (Raichur district). Like many others in the village his parents depend on daily wages for livelihood and struggling for basics. Spending money on his uniform, school books, stationary was just not a priority for them.
In school, all the children were excitedly preparing for the cultural show and science model exhibition under Goonj’s “School to School” initiative. At the end of the program children were awarded with carefully curated “School Kits” and a brand new pair of TOMS shoes. That day Kartik ran all the way back home in his new pair of shoes, to show to his waiting mother.
These shoes are reached out under a joint giving effort of GOONJ & TOMS (TOMS.com/improving-lives), a California based market leader in shoes. TOMS started its partnership with Goonj in 2013, pledging to give a new pair of shoes to a child in need on its every purchase; it strengthened the work and also validated our philosophy that small gaps do make a big difference…. #SchoolToSchool
