Vulnerability in a Forest Village
Krishnapur, a small village in Bangriposi block of Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district, lies amidst dense forest areas. Most homes here are built with mud, leaving them highly vulnerable to accidental fires. With limited resources and frequent challenges like water scarcity, such disasters often disrupt lives and livelihoods.
The Fire Incident
One such incident occurred at the home of Govinda Nanda. While he and his wife were away for work, a fire broke out and engulfed their mud house. Despite the villagers’ quick response and the fire brigade’s efforts, the house and its contents were destroyed.

Immediate Relief and Temporary Shelter
Soon after, the Goonj team reached the village to assist the family. Essential materials, tarpaulins, clothes, mosquito nets, sandals, and other daily-use items, were assisted. With community support, a temporary tarpaulin shelter was quickly set up, giving the family safe accommodation as they began rebuilding their lives.
Community Support and Recovery
Neighbours and fellow villagers stood by the family, showing solidarity in their time of crisis. Local voices shared that the relief materials were crucial for the family’s immediate settlement and recovery. One community member remarked, “These items are very valuable. They assisted what was most needed at a time when nothing could be purchased.”
