August 2026 Issue #87

“Some glimpses from my recent travels to Sivasagar and Jorhat in Assam. This year’s floods in Assam, Bihar, Odisha, Kashmir, Kerala and many other states are something else.. it’s time for all of us to stand with the people. Goonj is there, and many other Govt. and Not For Profits, and more importantly thousands of so called common citizens.. Work with anyone but do work..”

– Anshu Gupta (Founder- Goonj and Gram Swabhimaan)

“…And then there are the women….families who have lost almost everything still insist on offering us a cup of tea, a glass of drinking water, or even homemade lemon water. In the middle of unimaginable loss, they continue to extend kindness to strangers. That, to me, is the true meaning of resilience. Floods may washed away their homes, possessions and livelihood, but they cannot wash away humanity.”

– Pratik Konthoujam (Team Goonj, Assam )

Some glimpses from the field – Assam, Bihar, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha

Through Goonj’s Cloth for Work initiative, villagers restored the canal, bringing back water flow and making farmland cultivable again. Their efforts have also inspired nearby communities to take action.

Prasadchak, West Bengal: Seasonal flooding had cut off communities from schools, markets and healthcare across the Shilabati River. Through Goonj’s Cloth for Work initiative, villagers came together to build a bamboo bridge using local materials and collective labour, restoring a vital link and making everyday journeys easier.
