Bus stop by the main road now offered waiting shed for the locals

In the Nanivali village of Palghar district of Maharashtra, the bus stop by the main road offered no waiting shed for the locals. With waiting time extending for more than an hour on any normal day, people (including school going children) often had to stand in the open and had to face the vagaries of weather, from harsh summers to stormy rains.

So, soon after the visit by our team member, a group of residents from Nanivali were motivated to work towards the building of a bus stand under Goonj’s ‘Dignity For Work’ initiative. For this, local resources like bamboo, wood and tarpaulin were sourced. As a result of their three days of dedication and hard-work, this group of enthusiastic participants made a bus stand (10 ft x8 ft x9 ft) to the delight of the rest of the village. “We were facing this issue for many years, but never realized that together we could solve this problem ourselves. Thank you for your guidance. We now recognize our strength”, said the community members while expressing their happiness. Owing to the pandemic as many of the villagers had lost their jobs and were struggling to make ends meet, the DFW kits that they received for their efforts came as a timely support to them and their families.
