My Mother said so…!!

My Mother said so…!!

A nice breezy evening under the moon light with two torches. We were discussing about menstruation openly, frankly and loudly!!!!
I walked through the narrow lanes, climbed up the staircase and reached a small terrace in a slum where a lot of people involved in sex work live … There were no street lights but the big fat moon was shining above in its majesty. I met a bunch of teenage girls, full of energy, bubbling with anxiety, questions and the kind of happiness only teenage bestows.
When we started talking, they shared a list of things that they are refrained from doing when they menstruate. I asked them the reason for these restrictions. All I got was a gentle smile as they responded, “because my mother said so.”
The little girl in class 7th said, “I am not allowed inside my home when I menstruate.”
Why? “My mother said so”…
“I can’t touch kids and play with them when I menstruate” said another.
Why? “My mother said so”…
This wasn’t the first time we were hearing this response. Mothers are the most common source of restrictions around menses for young girls. The girls were eager to learn and understand how menstruation is a natural biological process and not a sin. They shared a lot of concerns, queries and challenges but the one common comment was that a girl should not be isolated and made to sit out when she his menstruating just because her mother said so!
A Mother daughter relationship is a precious gift for any girl. For all the mothers reading this post, here’s a question to think about, “Why do you think a menstruating girl should be restricted in her own home just because she is menstruating?
Let’s speak out and raise our voice for the dignity of the young innocent girls who will shape the future of our country.
