 Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

On Goonj’s ongoing 2018 Rahat Floods Campaign

(As on 2nd September, 2018)

Brief Background

Many states in India are facing alarming floods right now.  Lakhs of people in many states are reeling under the wrath of floods. In Kerala alone, lakhs of people are rendered homeless and 12 out of 14 districts are badly affected.  Goonj team headed by our Founder Mr. Anshu Gupta is there in Kerala implementing massive relief operations from two hubs – Cochin and Wayanard. Goonj is committed to work on relief and long term rehabilitation , the way we have been working on disasters in past 2 decades.

General queries

  1. What is the immediate action being undertaken?

Ans; A Goonj team is in Kerala actively working on the ground, reaching relief material to communities and setting up operations and partnerships for short term and long term interventions apart from immediate relief.

  1. What are the short term actions and expenses planned?

Ans; Goonj has hubs in Cochin and Wayanard right now from where we are channelizing relief material in big quantities to different parts of the state, through our own teams and local partner organizations and agencies. The expenses will largely be around buying basic essentials and logistics.

  1. What are the long term actions and expenses planned (3-6 months)

Ans; Even after first few monthsof disaster (3-6 months), Our disaster relief work will continue.. As a matter of fact right now we are intensifying it because this is the time when most media reportages, relief agencies and governments have closed or are closing their relief operations even though people are still going through the aftermath of the disaster.   In the next phase we will start talking to the disaster hit communities and engage them in the process of rehabilitation.  That’s how in many disaster hit areas across India we involve locals in repairing their own roads, infrastructures, bridges, schools etc..

  1.  Which specific district/regions will Goonj focus on its relief operations?

Ans.So far, we have decided to work on flood affected parts of Kerala and other affected southern states apart from Assam, Uttarakhand and Odisha.

  1. How many families or number of people will Goonj help in Kerala Floods?
Ans. Our initial target is to reach out to over 50,000 families in all flood affected states and 30,000 families in Kerala alone in the next few months which will increase as we go deeper and gather resources. Our major target is also to reach out most neglected tribal communities across the state and as we are creating our base here, we will be reaching out in many districts.
