25th year of Goonj

little girl

Girl with a ponytail

This iconic picture of a little girl, often seen on Goonj website and in publications. It is also a part of the Goonj logo.

Our founder Anshu Gupta clicked this photo, even before he started Goonj. He saw this little girl in the upper parts of Dhanaulti (Uttarakhand), wandering near the highway with her younger brother. While trying to design the logo of Goonj in its first year of inception, with little knowledge about symbols and the story of the logo, Anshu liked the simplicity, joy and calm in the eyes of this little girl and decided to include that in the logo. Recently, when Anshu went in search of this girl he met her brother and found that she is now married off in another village and works as an Anganwadi didi.

old baba

The baba with whitewash tag coat

This picture was taken in a village where Goonj reached out cloth to a community. We don’t know who took the picture or where it was but this has been one of our favorite pictures, over the years. You can see why! The grace of the old gentleman in the picture stands out but if you look closely the little dry-cleaning tag on his coat sleeve speaks volumes about the care and attention of the person who contributed this coat. Mindful giving is at the heart of our work in urban India. With a little attention and care, we can give respectfully, with dignity, for others.
