Issue

Assam is facing yet another floods this year with several of its districts under deluge. Incessant and heavy rains have affected almost 20 districts across more than 700 villages. The situation on ground is grave with massive forced displacement, loss of Infrastructure, livestock, and agricultural land. Recurring disasters in these states has not only been an economic strain but also severely impacts those who have not yet recovered from the earlier losses. Their resources are limited and the frequent disasters further derail their economic backwardness. In the immediate aftermath of a disaster, displaced people need food, shelter, security, and healthcare.

Plan of action

Goonj team is already on-ground activating its grassroot partnerships, volunteers and local authorities while setting up operations like organizing for space and facilitating logistics etc. Goonj utilizes this initial phase to mobilize urgent resources as much as possible for the next phase of long-term relief operations.

In Assam, Goonj works with a wide network of grassroots partners on ground that not only maximize our resources but also enhance our extent of coverage. Goonj’s strength lies in reaching material supplies swiftly to disaster hit zones through such partners.

The initial months of relief will be spent on reaching individuals and institutions for filling the large-scale material gap like dry ration, cleaning material, clothing, and other essentials which are collected from masses or purchased to make family kits.

Impact

Annual floods are a recurring disaster which do not get due attention in the mainline dailies and thus remain ignored for the rest of the nation. We reach out to thousands of affected families every year and continuously engage with them through our rehabilitation works to restore normalcy. When most relief agencies wrap up giving relief material, Goonj intensifies its relief material giving. This lessens the load of disaster hit families, struggling to get back on their feet, preventing bigger crises.
