Missed Out Communities

Background

For decades socio-economic-based marginalization has led to geographical marginalization of Missed out Communities such as tribals, leprosy-affected colonies, sex workers, transgenders, PWD, PLHIV, etc creating urban and rural ghettos. Even before Covid, the tribal population accounted for 25% of the total poor in the country and the major occupation for transgender and leprosy-affected communities was begging. However, Covid has brought about an unprecedented increase in unemployment, deprivation, and lifelong cycles of debt and despair.

Our Model

• Implementation teams in coordination with our 550+ partner network will nudge Missed Out Communities (such as tribals, leprosy-affected colonies, sex workers, transgenders, PWD, PLHIV, etc) to self-identify a problem and its solution in areas that have a long-standing impact on their development like infrastructure, water security, social stigma, menstrual health, education, etc. These clusters will then come together to self-implement their initiatives.
• In exchange for the community's efforts, they will earn a customized kit of essentials containing recycled and upcycled urban discards from our units and community-specific items such as ulcer kits, assistive devices, etc. These will address the material poverty of the community and free up their resources for other expenses.
