Agriculture and its allied sectors are dependent on natural resources and climate change.  Employing more than half of the country’s workforce, these sectors have been worst affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. While most Indian farmers have small and marginal holdings, the pandemic has affected their lives and livelihoods even further.

For such communities, accessibility to necessities, such as food, water and clothing, and their affordability, are a major concern during extreme weather conditions, like heavy rainfall, drought or floods. This is exacerbated by the fact that climate-related disasters are now more frequent than in the past. If projections are to be believed, the frequency of these calamities is likely to increase given the changing climatic conditions, increasing urbanization and environmental degradation. With a time-tested approach of community mobilization and dignity at its core, Goonj has been reaching out to remote rural communities mobilizing them to work around different local issues, such as water, sanitation and hygiene, agriculture, rural infrastructure, etc. Goonj ensures these communities receive support by way of materials and provisions based on their needs.

In line with their belief in giving back to the community, thousands of employees are coming together on Citi’s Global Community Day 2023 to mitigate hunger. Employees can contribute monetarily, starting from as little as INR 100 (enough to provide 1.5 kg of rice and half kg of pulses), going up to any multiple of INR 100. These contributions will become integral part of Goonj's comprehensive family kits, which will be channelized to remote rural communities in need. During a similar campaign in 2021, Citi colleagues in India contributed 115,551 kg of rice, thereby supporting 16,245 rural families.
