In a society which usually treats issues surrounding menstruation as a stigma and a taboo, the outlook of people of Rajasthan‘s Kharadi Phala village towards this subject is a testament to the positive change which is slowly, but steadily engulfing the country.

Kappuri Devi, 33, a Goonj volunteer from Jharkhali-III village in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. An epitome of passion, dedication and inspiration, she has not only helped Team Goonj to mobilise people of her community to rebuild houses and infrastructure destroyed in Cyclone Amphan but has also built new assets under Goonj’s ‘Dignity For Work’ #DFW initiative, and has helped in promoting gender equality and breaking the stigma around menstrual hygiene under the ‘Not Just a Piece of Cloth’ #NJPC initiative.

When we started working in Bundelkhand, our utmost priority was to reach the tribes of the hilly remote areas, and Bharatpura is one such village in Lalitpur district of the region. During the pandemic, adhering to all health guidelines and needs, we had started our ‘Dignity For Work’ (DFW) initiative in the village where the community cleaned a modest patch of land and leveled it up with soil to make a playground for children.

The nationwide lockdown meant loss of business and livelihood with a long-term impact on daily wage workers and people in the unorganized sectors. Sustainable livelihood options became the need of the hour, and to cater to this need and keeping in mind the safety demands of the day, Goonj and M&S initiated the production of cloth masks at Goonj Processing Units. The funds from Marks and Spencer India are playing a key role to support the livelihood of the women making these must-have products.

The village of Gharbhanga Jenasahi in Kendrapara district of Odisha recently saw how the joint efforts of the resident families towards community cleaning and livelihood projects could bring about a stable livelihood option to the locals. Villagers have been facing severe water-related problems and with no source of income, young boys are forced to search for a livelihood elsewhere. In an attempt to address the problems associated with forced migration and to create livelihood opportunities, Goonj along with its partner organization, developed a sustainable and profitable model of Community Farming to help the local communities of Beed (Maharashtra) under Goonj’s ‘Vaapsi’ (Livelihood) initiative to support around 160 individuals with seeds and farming materials apart from backing them in procuring 15 acres of land on lease and in contributing towards the first year’s rent.
