The women of #Lasunirvadi village in #Jalgaon, Maharashtra show the world how it’s done.. Most families here are migrant farmers of Madhya Pradesh, living in tiny shanties with 10-12 members. When we asked what issue they would like to solve for themselves with ‘Dignity For Work’ initiative, the women spoke about their struggle to take a bath in the absence of private spaces. They added that in the menstruation days, they often went without a bath for days or woke up very early to bathe. Many talked about poor hygiene, infections, burning, itching and other painful symptoms. When team Goonj met with the community and motivated them to come together and resolve this issue for themselves, in three days people constructed 15 bathrooms. Every person who participated in this work received Ration kits as a reward for their efforts. Now women can bathe in privacy, with dignity, taking care of their health and hygiene as well.. “We never thought that we could do this work together as a community,” many villagers proudly shared at the end of the work. Goonj’s Dignity For Work initiative is about creating a respectful barter between basic needs material and efforts, wisdom and resources of rural communities, for addressing their neglected issues. In 2019-20 people across India implemented 7000+ rural infrastructural projects to solve their own issues.
