How we all loved to walk into those classrooms with its bright-hued walls painted with our favourite cartoons. For the kids of Foksadanga village in Alipurduar district of West Bengal, their emotions towards their ICDS centre (Anganwadi) was no different. However, when they were left without a play area due to the dilapidated condition of the centre, 36 residents from their village decided to work towards its beautification under Goonj’s ‘Dignity For Work’ initiative. While the adults were motivated to pool in bamboo and money to buy colour and plant saplings, the youngsters joined the efforts by painting the walls and drawing cartoons. Moreover, they also undertook the making of a small kitchen garden with 100 saplings of eggplant, chilli and a variety of spinach. The locals often migrated to other states in search of work and returned back during the monsoons to cultivate paddy. Now, with the vegetable garden growing, the villagers look forward to having enough to eat during the monsoons as well. They believe that the vegetables at home will ensure sufficient savings without having to compromise on their nutritional intake.
