According to the locals of Chakbasto village in Kupwara district, Kashmir, the annual snowfall (of about 8 feet) and its subsequent melting often affects the stone structures in the region…one such was the boundary wall of a natural spring. It was in the wake of this situation that team Goonj motivated the locals towards the making of the boundary wall under our ‘Dignity For Work’ initiative. The melting snow not only brought down the wall, but also resulted in water runoff from the spring, and as the stones in the area are flat compared to the usual round ones, holding the structure intact was quite a challenge. However, for the team, there was no looking back, and their resolve paid off. Not only were they able to rebuild the wall (30ft x 4ft), but were also able to revitalize the spring by desilting it. So, when Goonj rewarded their hard work with essential Rahat Kits, they were overwhelmed. For they not only found an answer to their long-standing problem but were also able to ensure essential materials for their households, with dignity.
