When the walls of the irrigation canal at Karminga village in Ramban district of Jammu were being pulled down time and again by roaming cattle that came to quench their thirst, it often resulted in water runoff. To curb this crisis, locals of the region were motivated and mobilized to come together under Goonj’s ‘Dignity For Work’ initiative to build a boundary wall for the irrigation canal. As it was quite a task to bring sacks of cement up the hills, the participants resorted to using the local mountain clay to plaster the wall. Goonj rewarded their efforts with essential Rahat Kits. For them, the challenge was to construct a sturdy wall which ensures that the water from the canal reaches their farmlands but also lets the animals get their share of drinking water. Now the boundary wall, built with local know-how and resources, remains undamaged even as the cattle come to claim the canal as their own.
